Recycling in McKinney: What’s Next

The City of McKinney has received a grant from The Recycling Partnership to better understand local recycling patterns and educate our community on recycling right. Through this effort, we are analyzing our recycling stream and gathering resident feedback via focus groups and a community survey on recycling habits, values, and messaging. These insights will guide strategies to support McKinney’s Sustainability Roadmap, with the goal of increasing participation and diversion while reducing recycling contamination from 41–49% to 20–25% within five years.

Solid Waste Strategy Implementation

During this phase, the city evaluated its trash and recycling services. The following actions occurred:

  • An RFP was issued for material management, including trash and recycling haulers and a materials recovery facility (MRF).
  • Frontier Waste Solutions was chosen as the trash and recycling hauler.
  • Circular Services was chosen for the MRF. The new facility opened in April 2026.
  • A grant from The Recycling Partnership was received, covering the costs of city-owned trash and recycling carts and of education materials distributed and shared through various print and digital channels.
  • The Sustainability Roadmap is presented to the City Council, listing specific goals and targets for materials management (solid waste & recycling). Watch the Council work session presentation here.
